Signal of the Week
|
88% of AI pilots die before production - and the data finally proves why.
The pattern is consistent: pilots work, demos impress, and six months later the project is still a pilot. The data confirms it - 95% of enterprise AI projects stall at deployment, not because the AI failed, but because the organisation was not built to absorb it.
The average enterprise runs 200+ data sources, 80+ SaaS tools, and a security review process designed for a different era. The AI industry has been selling intelligence. What organisations actually need right now is deployment architecture.
The most important shift we make in every leadership engagement: stop asking what AI can do. Start asking what your organisation would need to rebuild for AI to actually run here. That question changes the budget conversation, the team structure, and the vendor decisions.

Policy Shift - US Government
|
The US government just pulled Anthropic's most powerful AI models
On June 12, 2026, the US Department of Commerce invoked unprecedented export controls against Anthropic's two newest models - Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 - barring all foreign access. The directive prohibited use by any foreign individual or organisation worldwide, including foreign nationals working inside Anthropic itself.
Unable to verify user nationality at scale, Anthropic suspended both models globally within hours - just three days after their official launch. This is the first time a commercially deployed AI model has been recalled through government enforcement.
Futurelab Take
Your AI vendor relationships now carry geopolitical risk. If critical workflows in your organisation run on a single frontier model, you need a contingency. Diversification is no longer just a technical decision - it is a governance one. This week's event is the clearest signal yet that AI procurement belongs in your risk framework, not just your technology budget.

Jeff Bezos bets $41 billion on an "artificial general engineer"
Bezos' AI startup Prometheus raised $12 billion at a $41 billion valuation. The pitch: an AI that compresses the design and build of the world's most complex physical systems - jet engines, industrial manufacturing, advanced hardware - from a decade to months.
Bezos took a public contrarian stance on jobs: AI will create a labour shortage, not eliminate work, as productivity unlocks entirely new categories of employment.
Futurelab Take
The "artificial general engineer" framing marks a shift from AI as a productivity layer to AI as a design partner - one that holds domain expertise at scale. For your leadership team: where in your value chain does expertise-at-scale change the competitive equation? That is where the ROI is hiding - and where your competitors are already looking.

3 Questions to Ask Before Approving Any AI Initiative
Most AI proposals land on your desk optimised to get approved, not to get deployed. Before you sign off on the next one, run it through this. Five minutes - surfaces the gaps a standard business case will not show you.
What business outcome does this directly support - and how do we measure it? If the answer is vague or the metric does not exist yet, the initiative is not ready. Clarity on the outcome before the build is the difference between infrastructure and experimentation.
What would need to change in our data, processes, or team for this to actually work? This question reveals what the organisation has to do - not what the AI does. Most pilots fail here, not in the model but in the integration layer underneath it.
What are the three most likely reasons this stalls before production? The team building it is incentivised to be optimistic. Surface the failure modes before you commit the budget, not after the first review in six months.
Copy This Prompt
"I am reviewing an AI initiative proposal: [paste brief]. Act as a sceptical board advisor. Tell me: (1) whether the stated business outcome is specific and measurable, (2) what organisational changes are required for this to actually work, and (3) the three most likely reasons this stalls before production. Be direct."
Pro tip: Run this on every AI vendor pitch you receive, not just internal proposals. The answers reveal immediately whether you are being sold a solution or a capability.

Workshop Recap
What one workshop did to AI confidence at a Hong Kong apparel company
Last week, Futurelab ran an AI Workflow Acceleration session for Lachmis International Limited. Role-specific, hands-on, zero disruption to existing operations.
By the end of the day, every participant reported confidence in using AI as part of their daily work. Not awareness - readiness.
That gap is where most organisational AI programmes fail. It is what we build for.
